No, as it activates the vestibular nerve which is responsible for balance, we recommend you enjoy your Modius session whilst sitting down.

Can I use Modius for more than 1 hour per day?

Due to regulatory reasons, there is a restriction within the Modius headset which means it is limited to one hour of use per day. In reality, this is per 16-hour time period to allow flexibility in your day.

What devices is the Modius app compatible with?

The Modius app is available on both iOS and Android and you can download it by clicking the below links:

We cannot guarantee compatibility with all devices, but as a general rule the following is required:

* For iOS devices, the Modius app should run on any iPhone or iPad device which is iOS 9.0 or later.

* Android devices require a minimum of Android 5.0 to be compatible, and the Bluetooth should have LE functionality.

If in doubt, please contact our Customer Care team at team@modiushealth and we will be able to assist.

Is Modius safe?

Although Modius is a new device, the technology of neurostimulation has been around for a long time and is well established. The first implanted devices were inserted over 30 years ago and operating at a higher voltage.

Modius has a greatly reduced current compared to these implanted devices and does not directly activate the brain but rather stimulates the balance nerve that runs in the bone of the skull behind the ear. We are therefore confident that Modius is very low risk in comparison.

Modius is classed as a general wellness device by the FDA.

If you have any concerns, we would encourage you to consult your doctor or healthcare professional before using Modius.

How and why was Modius developed?

The Modius range of headsets bring together our team’s passion for medicine, electronics and helping others.

The first headset, Modius SLIM was in development for over five years. It all began with Dr Paul McGeoch’s observation that electrical stimulation of the brain could help people struggling with weight loss. He shared his findings with his colleague and friend, Dr Jason McKeown, who had been drawn to the field of Neurosurgery in part due to his fascination with technology and electronics. Jason was intrigued. He quickly developed a prototype version of the device.

Like all good inventors, he immediately tested it on himself. Over time, he noticed a significant reduction in appetite, reduction in cravings and an increase in satiety. Within a year, he had managed to reduce his own body fat by 44%, and he also experienced a 2kg (4.5 lb) increase in muscle mass. While these results are not typical, he was convinced the technology worked as hypothesized.

The potential benefits of the technology now identified, Dr McKeown & Dr McGeoch contacted an award-winning manufacturing team and set about creating the device. After years of prototypes and testing, Modius Slim has been refined into a high-tech wearable headset that is already revolutionizing weight loss for thousands of people across the world.

Our second headset, Modius Sleep, is currently being manufactured and expected to ship in 2020, and aims to improve sleep without the need for medication.

Does Modius interfere with any other brain activity?

There is no evidence to suggest that Modius headsets interfere with any other brain activity.

Is Modius the same thing as a TENS unit?

While these devices have many things in common, the properties of the electrical pulses that Modius delivers are very different from that of a TENS. We would in no way recommend using a TENS (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation) device for vestibular nerve stimulation.

Does Modius have to be attached behind my ears?

Yes, the gel pads for the Modius headset must be applied behind your ears. This is the only place the device has been specifically tested, and the only place it will produce the desired effect of stimulating your vestibular nerve. You must never apply it anywhere else on the body, particularly on the head or chest.

What kind of charging cable does the Modius headset require?

Modius uses a standard Micro USB charging cable. If you have lost or damaged the cable which came with your headset, any standard Micro USB charging cable should also work.

Can I bring a Modius headset on a plane?

Yes, most airlines will allow the Modius headset to be taken on board, whether in hand luggage or in a checked-in suitcase. Many of our users regularly travel with their Modius and don't encounter any difficulty whatsoever.

However, a small number of airlines may restrict the carrying of items which contain a lithium battery so you may wish to check with your carrier prior to flying. For your reference, the type of battery contained in a Modius headset is a Lithium Polymer 3.7V 155mAh 0.57Wh.

How should I take care of my Modius headset?

Your Modius headset should ideally be stored in either the protective carry case or the box it came in when not in use.

When lifting the headset, it should be held by the headband section and not by the cables.

Please take care when putting on and taking off your Modius headset. When putting on your headset, we would recommend applying the pads first, and then connecting the cables.

Take particular care when removing your headset at the end of your session to avoid damage to the cables. We would strongly recommend disconnecting the cables from the electrode pads before removing your headset to avoid any undue stress on the cables.

Avoid over-bending the cables or putting strain on them when wearing the headset if leaning against a headrest or if lying down.

Your Modius headset should be kept clean and not left in direct sunlight or in conditions that are too warm, or indeed conditions that are too cold either.

How long do I need to charge my Modius?

We advise plugging your Modius into a power supply and leaving it to charge until the solid amber light goes out.

A standard charge will take approximately 2-3 hours depending on the power source.

Check your Modius app to get an indication of how much charge your headset has. A battery symbol will be visible when the headset is connected to the app.

What should I expect to feel from my first session?

The Modius headset works by stimulating the vestibular nerve. You’ll probably feel a light tingling/pricking sensation behind the ears where the pads are placed, although this usually gets less noticeable as the body gets used to it.

As the vestibular system is responsible for balance in the body, it’s normal to feel a little unsteady when wearing the headset (which is why we recommend only using it whilst seated). You will probably feel a slight rocking or swaying feeling from side to side, with the sensation often likened to that of being on a boat or as though you’ve had a glass of wine.

Everyone’s sensitivity to the stimulation will be different, and it will likely feel different across sessions too – sometimes you’ll feel it more than others, and this could be due to differences in body temperature, humidity levels, time of day, slight differences in the placement of pads etc.

If you are prone to seasickness, it’s possible that you will only be able to tolerate a very low level of stimulation, although over time the body will usually become more tolerant to it.

We therefore recommend that you start on level 1 and see how you feel, only increasing the level very gradually. Give your body time to get used to the feeling. You don’t need to be at the highest level for it to be working – just stick to the level at which you can feel the swaying feeling yet it’s still comfortable for you.

Modius Sleep

What is Modius Sleep?

Modius Sleep is a drug-free solution powered by neuroscience to safely and non-invasively improve a person’s sleep. Modius SLEEP stimulates the vestibular nerve to indirectly influence the hypothalamus, and positively impact the body’s circadian rhythm. The headset is worn for 30 minutes per day in the evening, prior to going to bed. Users should fine they will be able to get to sleep faster, stay asleep for longer and feel more rested in the morning.

Modius Sleep actively stimulated the key sleep neurons in the brain (ie Suprachiasmatic Nucleus and Orexin) to:

  • Reduce the time it takes to fall asleep
  • Reduce the amount of 'wake ups' during the night
  • Wake up feeling more rested
  • Improve energy levels during the day
  • Improve overall sleep quality

The headset is worn for 30 minutes each evening prior to going to bed.

Who is Modius Sleep suitable for?

Modius Sleep is for anyone who has difficulty sleeping – whether you are someone who has trouble getting to sleep, wake up during the night and can’t get back to sleep again, or constantly feel that you’re not getting enough sleep. 9 million Americans and 20% of the world population use sleep medications, drugs or alternative products to manage their sleep. Modius Sleep is a drug-free alternative that will positively influence the body’s circadian rhythm rather than simply masking the problem.

What makes Modius Sleep different?

Modius Sleep is drug free which offers people who suffer from poor sleep a way to avoid sedatives and sleeping pills that really only mask the problem and come with a host of nasty side effects. These side effects can include addiction / dependency, memory loss / amnesia, confusion and drowsiness during the day. Unlike other sleep headsets that are limited to passively reading brain-wave activity, Modius Sleep actively stimulates the key sleep neurons in the brain.

Does Modius Sleep track sleep?

No, Modius Sleep does not track sleep. It is a headset intended to be worn before you go to bed which will help prepare your brain for sleep.

How does Modius Sleep work?

Modius Sleep works by sending a safe electrical pulse into the vestibular nerve, influencing the areas of the hypothalamus and brain stem that control circadian rhythm and sleep patterns. It is worn for 30 minutes per day prior to going to bed.

Do you wear Modius Sleep in bed?

No, Modius Sleep should be worn in the evening before bed, ideally as you are starting to wind down for the night. It is not intended to be worn in bed.

How is Modius Sleep different to Modius Slim?

The technology of the two devices is similar in that both Modius Sleep and Modius Slim stimulate the vestibular nerve to indirectly influence the hypothalamus. However, Modius SLEEP has a different waveform which is specifically optimised to target the part of the brain that controls the circadian rhythm and help improve sleep.

The Slim & Sleep devices are very similar in that they stimulate the same areas of the brain. The difference is that the frequency of the electrical stimulation is unique to each device, so we believe the settings on the sleep device are best for sleep management, and we believe the settings on the Slim device are best for weight management.

That said, as the devices operate in the same areas of the brain, we do expect some overlap with the outcomes. For example, or biggest 'side effect' of the Slim device is that people have improved sleep.

So we do expect some people will find their appetite is decreased when using the Sleep device, so hopefully this can be used to help any weight loss attempts.

Will Modius Sleep work for everyone?

Everyone is different and Modius Sleep will naturally work better for some people than others. There are many factors which influence a person’s ability to sleep well (eg medications, age, medical conditions, stress, nightly routine etc) and Modius SLEEP may not be able to overcome all elements which contribute towards someone’s issues with sleep. The only way to know whether Modius Sleep will be able to help you is to try it. We offer a 45-day money back guarantee so you can give Modius a go!

Will I need to keep using sleeping tablets?

With daily use of the headset, we would expect that you should be able to reduce your reliance on sleeping tablets, and hopefully in time not require any other sedatives or tablets to be able to achieve a good night's sleep. However, we would recommend you discuss your own situation with your doctor prior to discontinuing any medication.

Can Modius Sleep help with jetlag?

The headset is not being marketed as a cure for jetlag. However, it should work with your body to assist your circadian rhythm to get in sync again quicker than before.

Will Modius Sleep work for someone who does shift work?

Modius Sleep should help shift workers get to sleep quicker and stay asleep for longer. We would recommend using the headset shortly before you would want to go to sleep.

How soon can I expect to notice the benefits of Modius Sleep?

Some people may notice improvements in their sleep from as early as the first night or two. However, for others it will take longer – and there will be some people whose sleep will initially be more interrupted before it starts to improve. This is perfectly normal and it’s worth persevering whilst the body adjusts to the vestibular stimulation.

If you find your sleep initially worse when starting to use the headset, we recommend moving and staying at a lower level 1-2 for a couple of weeks before moving up the levels.

Why does the Modius Sleep headset only need to be used for 30 mins per day, whereas the Modius Slim headset is 60 mins?

Our studies have shown that you will only need to use Modius Sleep for 30 minutes in order to gain the sleep benefits.

Can you use both the Modius Sleep and Modius Slim headsets on the same day?

We would only recommend a maximum of 1 hour of vestibular stimulation per day, so our advice would be that if you struggle with poor sleep, your priority should be to improve your sleep before focusing on weight loss. It’s a well-known fact that poor sleep is a factor in obesity, so once you see an improvement there, the process of losing weight should be easier.

If you want to improve sleep & lose a bit of weight, which headset is best to buy?

We would suggest that you decide which is a priority for you. If you struggle with poor sleep, then you would probably be best to address that first.

Can Modius Sleep help you lose weight as well?

Although both headsets are stimulating the hypothalamus via the vestibular nerve, Modius Sleep is specifically optimised to target the key sleep neurons in your brain which control your circadian rhythm. We would not expect Modius Sleep to have an impact on your weight.

What’s the science behind Modius Sleep?

It’s been widely known for many years that the vestibular system influences sleep… hence why rocking helps babies sleep, and why people tend to get sleepy during a long car or train journey.

However, many scientific studies conclusively prove the link between the vestibular system and circadian regulation. We carried out our own pilot study in May 2019 and the results were very compelling. As a result, an abstract was submitted to the British Sleep Society for inclusion at the 2019 Sleep Conference, and this is due to be published in the British Medical Journal following the conference.

Modius Sleep very specifically targets the key sleep neurons in the brain's sleep centre that is very deep in the brain, namely the Suprachiasmatic Nucleus and Hypocretin/Orexin system within the hypothalamus. It does this via electrical vestibular nerve stimulation which indirectly and safely influences the hypothalamus using a very specific waveform. The aim is to positively influence the body's circadian rhythm to enable you to get to sleep faster and waken up less, which should help you feel more rested the next day.

Vestibular stimulation has long been associated with improved sleep (rocking a baby to sleep is using vestibular movement), so you may wish to take a read at this article which explains a little more in this regard.

What should I expect to feel when wearing Modius Sleep?

Everyone is different so don't be tempted to go straight to power level 10.

Stick to a power level that is comfortable for you. To avoid any potential side effects, we recommend starting on level 1 and see how you feel, only increasing the level very gradually over the next few sessions.

The Modius headset works by stimulating the vestibular nerve. You’ll probably feel a light tingling/pricking sensation behind the ears where the pads are placed, although this usually gets less noticeable as the body gets used to it over the course of your 30 minute session.

As the vestibular system is responsible for balance in the body, it’s normal to feel a little unsteady when wearing the headset (which is why **we recommend only using it whilst seated**). You will probably feel a slight rocking or swaying feeling from side to side, with the sensation often likened to that of being on a boat or as though you’ve had a glass of wine.

The sensation will likely feel different across sessions too – sometimes you’ll feel it more than others, and this could be due to differences in body temperature, humidity levels, time of day, slight differences in the placement of pads etc.

If you are prone to seasickness, it’s possible that you will only be able to tolerate a very low level of stimulation, although over time the body will usually become more tolerant to it.

Give your body time to get used to the feeling. You don’t need to be at the highest level for it to be working – just stick to the level at which you can feel the swaying feeling yet it’s still comfortable for you.

How do you use Modius Sleep?

Modius Sleep is a headset which is intended to be worn for **30 minutes per day** (ideally a minimum of 5 times per week) when sitting down **prior to bedtime**, ideally late afternoon or early evening. The headset is operated by the Modius app which you will need to download to your phone or tablet device.

When you purchase a headset, you'll also receive alcohol cleansing wipes and electrode pads. Prior to each session, you will need to cleanse the bony area just behind the ear lobes (the Mastoid bone), leave to dry and then carefully apply one pad to each side. Allow a few minutes for the pads to adhere to the skin before starting your session.

The headset is placed on the head with the power button side above the right ear. Attach a cable to each pad and then press the power button on the headset to turn it on.

You will then follow the instructions on the app to pair the headset to your phone (the headset should automatically pair for subsequent sessions) and start the session. There are 10 power levels to choose from, but as people have very different levels of sensitivity to vestibular stimulation, we would recommend starting at level 1 and only moving up through the levels over the next few sessions if you feel comfortable.

Once a session has started, you can sit back and relax! Many people find the sensation very therapeutic, and you can use your time to watch TV, read or just make the most of your 'me-time'.

The headset will automatically stop after a maximum of 60 minutes and you will hear three beeps to indicate it is switching off. You'll be able to do your next session after a period of 16 hours (the headset is limited to one hour per day, but set to 16 hours to allow flexibility in your schedule).

Modius headsets should not be worn when exercising or operating machinery due to their stimulation of the vestibular system which is responsible for balance within the body.

What power level should I use Modius Sleep at?

Modius Sleep has power levels ranging from 1 to 10. **When starting to use your Modius, it's important not to have the power level set too high a level initially**. Even if you can't feel the sensation much, your body will still need time to get used to the vestibular stimulation provided by the headset.

Everyone will have a different sensitivity to the stimulation but we would **recommend starting at level 1 or 2** for approximately the first five sessions and only increase very gradually over time as you feel comfortable.

You should try to **find the optimum power level that works best for you** over the next few weeks - **this may not necessarily be at the highest level** even when you have been using the headset for some time, so don't feel that you need to be aiming for level 10.

How can I avoid side effects with Modius Sleep?

Firstly it's important to note that the vast majority of people use Modius without any side effects whatsoever, and most find the stimulation provided by the headset to be a relaxing experience.

The vestibular system gets stimulated naturally during many everyday activities such as skipping, jumping, trampolining etc. Even the action of rocking a baby to sleep is vestibular stimulation. Modius is delivering stimulation of the vestibular system by a pulsing to the area behind the ears where the vestibular nerve runs through to the hypothalamus.

However, everyone is different in their sensitivity to vestibular stimulation so you may find you are only able to tolerate the pulsing at a low level. There are 10 power levels with the Modius SLEEP headset, and it's **important to determine what the optimum level is for you**. This may not necessarily be the highest level even when you have been using the headset for some time, so don't try to push yourself higher than what is comfortable.

To avoid the chance of any side effects we recommend the following:

  1. **Start out slowly** at power level 1 (definitely no higher than level 3) for your first few sessions as it will take your body time to get used to the stimulation. As your body becomes accustomed to it, you will slowly be able to increase through the power levels - but only if you feel comfortable to do so.
  2. Make sure you only use the headset when you are **sitting down** as the vestibular system is associated with balance in the body.
  3. Your sleep may initially be more disrupted in the first few days of using Modius as your body gets used to the stimulation. To reduce the chances of disrupted sleep, we would recommend running your initial sessions in the early evening (or even late afternoon if particularly sensitive to the stimulation).
  4. Ensure you **increase your fluid intake** - many users report feeling more thirsty when they start to use Modius.
  5. If you feel uncomfortably nauseous, dizzy or have a headache, discontinue use for a few days and only start back using your headset again when any symptoms have subsided, and only as and when you feel ready. Again, we recommend starting at level 1 and only increase the level over time if you are not experiencing any side effects.
  6. If you are concerned at all, we recommend checking with your doctor.
  7. Should you experience any skin irritation from the pads, we would advise discontinuing use until any inflammation has settled. The application of aloe vera gel will sooth the skin. The irritation may be coming from the alcohol cleansing wipes, so you can use soap and water to gently cleanse the area before applying pads instead of the wipes.

Is Modius Sleep FDA approved?

We are currently working with the FDA to generate a prescription sleep device that is approved by the FDA to treat insomnia and would expect this to be in place next year. In the meantime, the FDA are currently allowing us to bring out a low-risk consumer sleep management device ahead of the prescription device. Modius Sleep would be categorised by the FDA as a General Wellness Device.

*Modius Sleep is a sleep management device – not an insomnia treatment.

What do I do when I receive my Modius Sleep headset?

In the Modius box, you will receive a headset, charger (or USB charging cable if you’ve purchased a refurbished unit), User Manual, 150 electrode pads and 100 cleansing wipes. You should first attach the charging cable to the headset and plug into the charging plug or USB so the headset can charge. When charging, you should see a solid amber light which will go out once charging has finished. It will take approx. 3 hours for your headset to charge, depending on the type of charger you are using.

A flashing amber light when charging indicates a charging error.

Before running your first session, you will need to download the free Modius app onto your phone or tablet device.

Click either of the following links to access the app on either Android or Apple

When downloaded, you will need to create an account. You’ll see some videos on the app to help you get started so you can watch these either now or later. You should follow the prompts to input your height and weight, gender and date of birth. We recommend you click the button to allow alerts so that you receive session notifications and weight log reminders. They can be turned off at a later date if you don’t find them useful.

How do I get set up for my first Modius Sleep session?

When your headset has fully charged (and the solid amber light has turned off), you are ready for your first session.

Cleansing the area:

You will need to use one of the alcohol wipes provided with your headset to cleanse the bony area just behind the ears (the ‘Mastoid bone’), allowing the area to fully dry before trying to attach pads.

Attaching the pads:

Peel off the clear plastic from one of the pads and carefully (without touching the sticky area of the pad) attach a pad to the bony area behind each ear.

We recommend waiting a few moments after the pads have been applied before attaching the cables and trying to run a session, as the warmth of the skin will help the adhesiveness of the pads build up.

Getting connected to run a session:

Assuming you are already set up on the app, the phone and headset will need to be paired for the first time so they have a secure connection.

First press the power button on the headset to turn it on.

Now open the Modius app and follow the pairing instructions on the screen to pair your headset via Bluetooth. The app will find the headset and ask you to pair so you’ll need to click the power button on the headset once when prompted by the app to acknowledge the pairing.(some Android phones require an additional step, accepting the pair request in the notification tray). When a connection has been established, you’ll see the battery level symbol showing on the app.

Your phone or tablet device should recognise and auto-connect in the future when the headset is on and the app is open. You shouldn’t need to pair again the next time you run a session, unless you have had to do a USB reset in between times for any reason.

Troubleshooting

How do I get set up for my first session?

When your headset has fully charged (and the solid amber light has turned off), you are ready for your first session.

Cleansing the area

You will need to use one of the alcohol wipes provided with your headset to cleanse the bony area just behind the ears (the ‘Mastoid bone’), allowing the area to fully dry before trying to attach pads.

Attaching the pads

Peel off the clear plastic from one of the pads and carefully (without touching the sticky area of the pad) attach a pad to the bony area behind each ear. The following diagram shows the area you are wanting to attach to:

We recommend waiting a few moments after the pads have been applied before attaching the cables and trying to run a session, as the warmth of the skin will help the adhesiveness of the pads build up. Place the headset on your head (the power button side goes above your right ear) and attach the cable connectors onto each pad.

Getting connected to run a session

Assuming you are already set up on the app, the phone and headset will need to be paired for the first time so they have a secure connection.

First press the power button on the headset for a couple of seconds to turn it on. You will hear a high beep.

Now open the Modius app and follow the pairing instructions on the screen to pair your headset via Bluetooth. The app will find the headset and ask you to pair so you’ll need to click the power button on the headset once when prompted by the app to acknowledge the pairing. (some Android phones require an additional step, accepting the pair request in the notification tray).

If you require any further help, contact our Customer Care team on team@modiushealth.com and they’ll be able to assist.

Starting your session

Once connected, press the Start button on the app to begin your session and use the arrows to increase or decrease the power level. We advise that you start at a low level (no more than level 3) to begin with, as your body will probably take a little time to get used to the stimulation. Some people are more sensitive to vestibular stimulation than others so just stay at a level that you feel comfortable with. It's not a race to level 10!

We recommend sitting down during your Modius session, watching TV, reading a book or browsing the internet.

When your session has finished, you will hear 3 beeps and the white light on the headset will flash rapidly. Make sure to disconnect the cable connectors from the pads before taking your headset off to avoid pulling and damaging the cables.

How do I perform a USB reset on my Modius?

In the event that your Modius needs a reset, here are the steps to take:

  1. 1. Plug your Modius into a power source.
  2. Hold the power button down on your device for 10 seconds – it will beep once after the 10 seconds, followed by a pause, then three more beeps when you’ve done this correctly.
  3. Remove Modius as a paired device from your phone.
  4. Re-pair your Modius to your phone by following the prompts within the app.

At this point, you should be able to use your device again.

If your Modius still isn’t working, please get in touch with our Customer Care team via email at team@modiushealth.com.

How do I know Modius is working?

When you have put on the headset, attached the pads and started your session via the app, the white light on the headset should be solidly lit. This should stay lit with a solid white light for the duration of your session. When your session has finished, you will hear 3 beeps, the white light will start to flash and you should then turn off your headset using the power button.

You may not always feel the stimulation produced by the headset, as it will feel different across your sessions and sometimes you’ll feel it more than others. Additionally, you will often feel it more on one side than the other, and the slight tingling sensation is usually felt more at the start of a session than at the end as the body gets used to the sensation.

With consistent use (we recommend at least 5 sessions per week), most users notice changes to their appetite, satiety and cravings so we would encourage you to listen to your body and respond accordingly as Modius helps you to reach your ultimate weight goal.

The pulsing behind my ear is stronger on one side versus the other. Is this normal?

Yes, this is completely normal. Although the electrical pulse frequency being delivered behind each of your ears is exactly the same the feeling on the skin itself can vary.

I'm getting a 'Check Pads' error - what should I do?

If you are getting the ‘Check Pads’ error during your Modius session, we would suggest the following:

  1. Make sure you have wiped the area behind your ears using an alcohol wipe & leave the area to dry before attaching the pads
  2. Ensure no hairs are in the way (we recommend tying long hair back)
  3. Attach pads to the bony area behind the ears (see below image), and avoid touching the sticky area of the pads
  4. Adhesion of the pads will increase over time so leave it a few minutes before attaching the headset. Start the device at a low level and build up through the power levels very gradually over the next few minutes, as the higher pulse can sometimes make the pads looser initially.
  5. We strongly recommend storing the pads in their original bags and fold over to avoid the pads becoming dried out

My headset won't charge / amber flashing light when charging

When charging, the headset should have a solid amber light, which will go out when fully charged.

If you are getting a flashing amber light when your headset is plugged in to charge, this indicates a problem with the battery which can be fixed by following the instructions as outlined below. This process is in effect doing a ‘trickle-charge’ to the battery (a bit like a jump-start). Please repeat these steps until the battery level reaches enough charge to display a solid amber light. You will then need to allow the battery to fully charge until the amber light turns off.

  1. Connect your headset to the charger (or via a laptop if you didn’t receive a charger with your purchase). Allow 10 seconds. Amber should be flashing.
  2. Hold the power button on the headset. You will hear the ‘power on’ beep. Don’t let go of the power button – keep it pressed throughout.
  3. Disconnect the USB charging cable. Keep that power button pressed.
  4. Reconnect the USB charging cable.
  5. Release power button. Amber light now solid – continue to charge.

I'm having difficulty connecting via Bluetooth

The Modius headset connects to the app via Bluetooth so if you are having trouble pairing your device, the following tips should help with establishing a connection:

Make sure that both your phone (power saving mode often affects Bluetooth connectivity) and headset are charged as a low battery on either device will affect the pairing process.

If you have an Android device, you will also need to ensure your ‘Locations Services’ are set to ON in both the Modius app settings and your general phone settings. This is a requirement for Android 6 and above when using Bluetooth and nothing to do with us needing to know your location!

Before turning on the headset, make sure you are closed out of the Modius app.

When you press the power button on the headset, you should hear a single high-pitched beep which indicates it’s turned on.

Now open the app on your phone or tablet. You’ll see the Modius dashboard and you should see it saying ‘scanning for headset’. The light on the headset will flash blue to indicate it’s searching for a Bluetooth pairing.

Make sure to follow the prompts on the app to click the headset power button when the pairing has been successful.

If you are not getting a paired connection after 60 seconds you could try to force-close the app and restart it again, and also turn the headset off and on again (by pressing the power button) as this is often all that may be required.

However, if you are still having issues, run through the following steps:

  1. Go into your phone/tablet’s Bluetooth settings and ‘Forget’ Modius as a recognised device
  2. Turn your Bluetooth off in your phone or tablet
  3. Turn phone or tablet device totally off and power up again
  4. Turn Bluetooth on in phone or tablet
  5. Turn on headset
  6. Open the Modius app and follow the steps on the app to pair your headset

Suitability

Can Modius be used if I have a pacemaker?

No, we err on the side of caution as Modius delivers a small electrical pulse and we don’t want that to interfere with the functioning of the pacemaker. Modius has not been tested on anyone with a pacemaker.

Is Modius recommended for everyone?

We do not recommend using Modius if you have an implanted cardiac pacemaker or defibrillator, or a deep brain stimulation device, as there is a small possibility the electrical pulses from the devices could interfere with one another.

Modius is a vestibular nerve stimulator. Thus we do not recommend using Modius if you suffer from chronic vestibular nerve dysfunction, vertigo, mal de debarquement syndrome or inner ear problems – e.g. Ménière’s disease. Individuals with epilepsy should consult their primary care physician or other healthcare provider before using Modius, as certain types of epilepsy, in particular reflex vestibular, can be triggered by vestibular stimulation.

We also do not recommend using Modius if you are pregnant as we have not tested the headset with someone that is pregnant and therefore cannot be certain about any potential side effects. Therefore please avoid using Modius until after your baby is born.

Modius is to be used by adults age 18 and over only.

Can I invest in Neurovalens?

Can I use Modius if I have a Cochlear Implant?

No, unfortunately if you have a Cochlear Implant you should not use Modius.

Will this product interfere with medications?

Modius stimulates the vestibular (balance) system and is intended solely to assist adults in achieving their weight loss and weight management goals. We would suggest that you first discuss your own situation with your family doctor before putting on a headset.

Is Modius suitable for women in menopause?

Menopausal women are not necessarily precluded from using Modius, but it does not treat menopause. Consult with your doctor or healthcare professional if you have any concerns before using Modius.

Can I use Modius if I have diabetes?

Having diabetes (type 1 or 2) does not necessarily mean you cannot use Modius, but you may wish to speak to your doctor or healthcare practitioner before putting on a headset.

Can people with epilepsy use Modius?

Modius stimulates the brain’s vestibular (balance) system. Whilst this should not affect most people with epilepsy, it could trigger a seizure in someone with reflex vestibular epilepsy. Potential users with epilepsy should first chat things over with their family doctor.

Can I use Modius if I am pregnant?

We do not recommend using Modius if you are pregnant. We have not tested the headset on individuals who are pregnant and therefore cannot be certain about any potential side effects. Please avoid using Modius until after your baby is born.

Would the headset aggravate conditions like tinnitus or vertigo?

There is no evidence to suggest that would be the case. However, it’s best to first discuss your individual case with your family doctor.

Is there a minimum age for this product?

Modius is intended to be used only by adults age 18 and over.
